Nursted Farm Bed and Breakfast

About the farm and family

The Bray family has been living at Nursted Farm for over 100 years and the current farmer Andrew is the fourth generation to farm the land.

Andrew lives in the main farmhouse with his wife Elaine and his  parents Gordon and Mary. The Bray family have their family history deep in farming with both sides being able to trace their roots back many generations to Cornwall and Northumberland.

Gordon and Mary as well as running the B&B are very much involved with the farm work

The farm is over 300 hundred acres in size and is split over three areas. The land adjacent to the main house consists of woodland and open countryside providing excellent walking with fantastic views; on a clear day Butser Hill can be clearly visible.

We are a mixed farm in that we grow cereal crops and have a flock of sheep currently about 440 breeding ewes and 16 rams. The ewes are cross bred bought in at about a year old from the North of the oountry and the rams we use are eith Southdown or Hampshire down. The later being breeds associated with this area and the resulting lamb offspring we sell under the banner of local produce.

Crop wise we usually grow wheat, barley and occasionally oats. We also have extensive grassland that is used as grazing for the sheep or cut and made into haylage; winter feed for the sheep. The grain section of the cereal crop is sold and the straw stalk is baled and stored to be used as winter bedding; again for the sheep.

Farm work is 24/7 especially with animals however there are more peiods that are busier than others for example March through to May is particularly busy as this is the time that the ewes are due to lamb.
